Huge protests defending women rights in front of the Embassy

On 22 October 2020, the Constitutional Court in Poland ruled that abortion due to foetal defects is unconstitutional.

Immediately, Poles started to protest against this horrendous decision both in major cities (100,000 protestors on 31 October in Warsaw) and in small Polish towns and villages in rural areas. These spontaneous events are being held in spite of the ban on public gatherings due to the pandemic.

Numerous members of KOD UK attended the solidarity protests in front of the Polish Embassy in London. Similar pickets happened in other cities in the UK: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Dundee, Edinburgh, Huddersfield, Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Newquay, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, York.

We support women fighting for their right to decide for themselves and express solidarity especially with those who have difficult pregnancies and whose access to professional advice and choice has been restricted.

We protest against the circumstances in which the verdict of the Court was reached. The judges on the panel included Julia Przyłębska, a close friend of the head of the Law and Justice Party, its two former MPs, and most importantly, three judges elected in an unlawful procedure (according to an earlier verdict of the Court). The ruling comes after 5 years of consistent deformation of the judicial system: the erosion of the rule of law, restricting judicial independence, the election of judges based on their political views rather than expertise etc. This highly politicised issue seems to also serve as a cover-up for the government’s failings during coronavirus’ second wave.
